This book is not yet featured on Listopia. This is a mess of a book. It reads like an outline for a long essay that needs fleshing out and editing.
Latouche is persuasive in defining the problem he wishes to address: It can be summarized that Latouche succeeds at analysis, but falls short of prescriptions. Latouche offers eight values to guide how we are to transform sukla in accordance to a de-growth logic, some of which are shared by other movements and schools with which Latouche disagrees. Perhaps the French context in which Latouche writes makes a difference, but I feel that he simply does not provide sufficient evidence to counter more prevailing wisdom that density and transit—ie urbanism—is the only hope for environmental survival.
However, it is my opinion that whenever initiatives fail to be profitable, corporations will resort to non-green business practices. Related to the need for citizen control of the economy is worker control of the workplace, a topic that Latouche does not touch upon.
In fact, the several times in the whole book that he addresses unions, it is usually criticizing them for being barriers to de-growth. Still again, Latouche overlooks the role of worker power generally and the labor movement particularly, when he calls for the recentralization of production.
He decries outsourcing and calls for the reversal of this trend, without recognizing that the strength of worker organization is needed to do so. dcrescita

Nonetheless, as I brege above, Latouche must come to terms with class in his analysis. Finally, he should expound what is meant when he writes: Too much theory but not a concrete action plan to achieve what the book praises for.

Would have liked to have seen some proposals regarding decresscita urban areas, a reality which he seems to ignore personally I’d have no interest in living in a small town or rural area. His thoughts on our brece with other animals discussed only towards the very end, and Decresctia wondered why it took so long considering the fundamental importance he rightly gives to the environment are confused and speciesist.
